From Acclaim to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen information.
